Inmate Killed in Yard Attack at California’s Solano Prison

Two suspects are in restricted housing pending a homicide inquiry after officers used chemical agents, with an improvised weapon recovered.

  • Prison officials say Brenten G. Kinzenbaw, 27, was attacked around 7:40 a.m. on the Facility B recreation yard at California State Prison, Solano, and was pronounced dead at 8:15 a.m.
  • The alleged assailants were identified as inmates Christian Dumas, 24, and Stephen J. Archer, 38, who were removed from the yard and placed in restricted housing; no other injuries were reported.
  • Staff deployed chemical agents to stop the assault and recovered an improvised weapon at the scene, with the incident being investigated as a homicide.
  • CDCR’s Investigative Services Unit and the Solano County District Attorney’s Office are leading the probe, the Office of Inspector General was notified, and the coroner will determine the cause of death.
  • Kinzenbaw was serving five years and four months for assault and evading officers; Archer is serving life with the possibility of parole for a Sonoma County murder, and Dumas is serving Kern County sentences and arrived at Solano in November 2024.
