Inmate Charged with Attempted Murder for Stabbing Derek Chauvin in Prison

John Turscak Allegedly Attacked Chauvin as a Symbolic Gesture to the Black Lives Matter Movement

  • John Turscak, a federal inmate and former member of the Mexican Mafia prison gang, has been charged with attempted murder for stabbing Derek Chauvin 22 times in prison.
  • Turscak allegedly attacked Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd, in the law library of the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona.
  • Turscak reportedly told investigators he had been contemplating assaulting Chauvin for about a month due to his high-profile status and chose Black Friday for the attack as a symbolic connection to the Black Lives Matter movement and the 'Black Hand' symbol associated with the Mexican Mafia.
  • Turscak faces charges of attempted murder, assault with intent to commit murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, and assault resulting in serious bodily injury. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years for the murder charges and up to 10 years for the other charges.
  • Chauvin, who was severely injured in the attack, is serving a 21-year federal sentence for violating George Floyd’s civil rights and a 22 1/2-year state sentence for second-degree murder.
