Informal Sector Jobs Nudge Higher in July–September as Establishments Reach 7.97 Crore

A larger, quarterly NSO survey offers a timelier read on the informal economy.

  • Employment in unincorporated non‑agricultural enterprises edged up to 12,85,95,600 from 12,85,72,500 in the previous quarter, according to the official release.
  • The estimated number of establishments rose to 7.97 crore, up from 7.94 crore in April–June and from 7.34 crore a year earlier.
  • Unincorporated manufacturing rebounded, with its share of establishments rising from 26% to 27% and its share of employment from 26% to 28% quarter on quarter.
  • Urban workforce estimates increased to 6.91 crore from 6.61 crore, while the hired‑worker share rose to 25.91% and 13.41% of establishments employed hired workers.
  • Internet use among enterprises increased from 36% to 39%, and the NSO noted a roughly 1.5x larger sample and new quarterly estimates to strengthen reliability and timeliness.
