Inflatable Trampoline Owner Jailed for Toddler's Death

Curt Johnson sentenced to six months, company fined, and disqualified from directorship following 2018 incident that led to the death of three-year-old Ava-May Littleboy

  • Curt Johnson, the owner of the inflatable trampoline that exploded in 2018, leading to the death of three-year-old Ava-May Littleboy, has been sentenced to six months in jail. Johnson was found to be 'wilfully blind to the risk' and the trampoline 'should not have been in use'.
  • Johnson and his company, Johnsons Funfair Ltd, pleaded guilty to two health and safety offences, including importing an inflatable trampoline that they failed to ensure was safe and failing to ensure people not in their employment were not exposed to risks.
  • The inflatable trampoline was a 'sealed unit' but had no safety valve to release pressure, which led to the explosion. The trampoline was not checked by an independent third party and had no instruction manual.
  • In addition to the jail sentence, Johnson was disqualified from being a company director for five years. His company, Johnsons Funfair Ltd, was fined £20,000 and ordered to pay almost £300,000 in costs to the council and Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
  • Ava-May's parents, Nathan Rowe and Chloe Littleboy, expressed relief at the sentencing, with Rowe stating that 'justice is being done'. The family hopes that this incident will highlight the serious risks these attractions can pose and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
