Infant Killed in Bahraich Wolf Attack as Drone-Led Hunt Intensifies

Officials say the death is the ninth child fatality in a months-long series of wolf attacks in the district.

Overview

  • Four-month-old Subhash was taken from his home in Mallahanpurwa around 1:30 a.m., and villagers and officials later reported finding his clothes and remains about a kilometre away.
  • Divisional forest officer Ram Singh Yadav said the manner of the abduction and eyewitness accounts point to a wolf, with pugmarks traced from the home.
  • Forest teams are conducting drone-assisted searches across riverbanks and sugarcane fields, and trained shooters have been deployed to track the animal.
  • Authorities have ordered that the predator be captured or, if necessary, shot, following earlier state directives after months of attacks.
  • The district has recorded 11 deaths, including nine children, and at least 32 injuries since September, with two girls wounded in separate incidents on December 5.
