Infant Dies After Emergency Delivery Following Marion County RV–SUV Crash That Killed 5-Year-Old, FHP Says

An FHP update says the mother remains hospitalized in critical-but-stable condition following the emergency delivery.

Overview

  • Florida Highway Patrol reports the early Saturday collision occurred around 5:45 a.m. at U.S. 27 and County Road 316 in northwestern Marion County.
  • Troopers say the SUV left the roadway to the right, crossed the grass shoulder and struck the left side of a southbound motorhome, causing the RV to overturn.
  • A 5-year-old boy riding in the motorhome died at the scene, and the SUV driver, who was 35 weeks pregnant, underwent surgery in which her baby was delivered and later died.
  • More than a dozen people from the RV were taken to hospitals, and troopers later said the injuries to those passengers were not believed to be life-threatening.
  • FHP said the RV carried 15 people from Springfield, Ohio and that none were wearing seatbelts; the roadway was temporarily closed for the investigation and has since reopened.
