INEI Report Tallies 1,029 Incidents During Peru’s 2025 Census

INEI says security is being reinforced to keep fieldwork going.

  • An internal monitoring report dated September 24 and shared with RPP counts 1,029 incidents affecting census enumerators in August and September.
  • The tally includes 7 cases of sexual harassment or attempted assault, 79 verbal or physical attacks, 98 stolen tablets, 543 accidents or injuries, and 302 dog bites.
  • Regional hotspots recur across categories, with Lima Metropolitana leading in several metrics and notable counts also reported in Callao, Piura, Puno, Arequipa, Ica, Junín, Cusco, Apurímac, and Lambayeque.
  • After an attempted sexual assault reported in Chiclayo, the regional INEI office said the enumerator received comprehensive support and that her physical and emotional safety is being prioritized.
  • Operations continue with staff replacements and emergency convocations, Ayacucho reports 59.6% of people enumerated as of September 24, and tablet-based data capture proceeds offline in low-connectivity areas.
