Inegi’s Final 2024 Mortality Count: Deaths Up 2.5%, Homicides Rise to 33,550

The institute’s tally consolidates death certificates from all states to provide the authoritative measure.

Overview

  • Mexico registered 819,672 deaths in 2024, a 2.5% increase from 2023, for a crude rate of 630 per 100,000 inhabitants.
  • Inegi counted 33,550 homicides in 2024, up 4.02% from 2023’s 32,252, placing homicide as the eighth leading cause of death.
  • Diseases of the heart, diabetes mellitus and malignant tumors were the three leading causes of death nationwide.
  • Health-related conditions accounted for 89.6% of registered deaths, while external causes such as accidents, homicides and suicides represented 10.4%.
  • Inegi’s figures indicate 203,786 homicides across 2019–2024, and men accounted for 55.9% of all deaths in 2024.
