INEGI’s ENUT 2024 Shows Women Work More Hours, Most of Them Unpaid

The new time‑use survey provides actionable evidence on unequal care burdens to inform gender‑equity policy.

  • Women averaged 61.1 total weekly work hours versus 58 for men, with a national average of 59.6 hours for people aged 12 and older.
  • Women devoted 66.8% of their work time to unpaid activities compared with 33.2% for men, reflecting an average unpaid‑work gap of about 20.5 hours per week.
  • State totals varied widely, with the longest average workweeks in Hidalgo (65.6 hours), Querétaro (64.2) and Durango (64.1), and the shortest in Chihuahua (54.4).
  • The largest gender gaps in total work time were in Oaxaca (8.4 hours) and in Guerrero and Nayarit (7.1 each), while men worked slightly more than women in Quintana Roo (-0.4) and Yucatán (-0.2); gaps were much larger for indigenous‑language speakers (27.3 hours) and residents of small localities (26.4).
  • INEGI collected ENUT 2024 data from October 7 to November 29, 2024 across 32,048 households and added modules on exercise, reading, civic participation, cultural activities and videogames.
