Overview

  • INEGI’s quinquennial survey counted 7,093,631 fixed-location establishments in 2023, marking a record high.
  • Informal units rose to represent 64.3% of all establishments in 2023, an increase of 1.7 percentage points since 2018.
  • Informal businesses employ about 6 million people—21.4% of the workforce—yet contribute only 3.6% of Mexico’s gross value added.
  • Formal private and para­statal firms number 5.5 million and provide jobs to 27 million workers, with microenterprises comprising 95.4% of that total.
  • Mexico City houses 22.6% of national establishments, while Oaxaca posts the highest informal rate at 81.5% and Quintana Roo the lowest at 35.9%.
