Overview
- INE presented models I and J and began production of the new Credencial para Votar, which the authority says adds 25 distinct security elements to make the card harder to falsify.
- The card updates include an advanced DOVID hologram, microtext and nanotext, thermochromic and UV‑reactive inks, a tactile notch for visually impaired users, and upgraded bidimensional QR codes for digital verification.
- The new credential allows voluntary self‑identification of gender (options: M, H, NB) and optional auto‑identification as indigenous or afromexican, with those choices added only when requested by the cardholder.
- Production began on June 1, 2026, and INE will issue the new models gradually to first‑time applicants, renewals, replacements or when personal data are updated while existing valid cards remain usable.
- A December contract with Talleres Gráficos de México and Cosmocolor runs through May 2031, sets a unit cost near 13.50 pesos, and funds a production center the INE says can make up to 90,000 cards per day while protecting the electoral roll from sharing with other agencies.
