Overview
- The Instituto Nacional Electoral formally opened the national 2026–2027 electoral process, with the institute publishing a definitive calendar that structures precampaigns, candidate registration, campaigns and a January 25, 2027 deadline to obtain or update voter ID.
- INE projects a Lista Nominal of more than 102 million registered electors and plans roughly 176,741 polling stations to serve an election that will contest about 20,109 public posts, including 500 federal deputies and 17 governorships.
- One day before the process began, Secretary-Executive Claudia Arlett Espino submitted an irrevocable resignation for health reasons and Council President Guadalupe Taddei Zavala named Roberto Carlos Félix López as acting Secretary-Executive to maintain operational continuity.
- At the state level the Instituto Electoral del Estado de México will formally start its local process on September 14 to renew 1,291 posts and will use a new digital candidate-registration system while extending the filing window from 15 to 30 days to speed and clarify submissions.
- INE officials have publicly urged efforts to rebuild public confidence and voter participation as the country prepares for administration tasks such as updating the voter roll, staffing tens of thousands of polling locations and monitoring candidate registrations, which will determine how smoothly the June 6, 2027 elections run.
