INE Faces Credibility Crisis After Taddei Resignation

OIC and ASF investigations, a swift purge of officials tied to Taddei, and demands for an open selection of a new president have raised urgent doubts about the institute’s readiness for the 2027 elections.

Overview

  • Guadalupe Taddei resigned as INE president on October 26, and the Council named Blanca Yassahara Cruz García provisional president while the Chamber of Deputies prepares a permanent replacement.
  • The INE internal watchdog, the Órgano Interno de Control, says it reduced its caseload this year to 446 unresolved investigation files that cover alleged anomalies from Taddei’s and Lorenzo Córdova’s administrations.
  • The OIC told deputies it has 18 files tied to incidents publicized in the press, with 13 under investigation, five in administrative procedures, and five people already found to have committed faltas graves.
  • The Auditoría Superior de la Federación has opened fiscal reviews of INE spending and procurement as press reports and OIC findings point to repeated contracts with a small set of suppliers linked to contractor José Alfredo Hernández Casillas.
  • About 19 senior staff reportedly left or were asked to resign within a week after Taddei’s exit, several local appointment proposals were blocked, and business groups and parties are pressing for a transparent, technically rigorous selection process and legal review of the 2024 reform that expanded presidential appointment powers.
