Indus Swells to Medium Flood at Kotri as Mangla Nears Capacity

Downstream districts face evacuations with mounting damage to crops and infrastructure.

Overview

  • Flood Forecasting Division Lahore reported a 12,000 cusec 24‑hour rise at Kotri Barrage to roughly 420,000 cusec, classifying it as a medium flood, with other rivers easing and Mangla Dam close to full.
  • Rising water has inundated additional kachcha villages in Thatta and sustained pressure on protective embankments in Sujawal, Jamshoro and Nawabshah, damaging hundreds of acres of rice, cotton, banana and papaya.
  • District administrations have set up tent camps and are relocating residents to safer areas as water pressure increases on river defenses.
  • Emergency works continue on breached and stressed bunds, including repairs at Noorajah Bhutta, while the M‑5 from Multan to Jhangra remains closed for a 14th day and a damaged gas pipeline is under repair.
  • Relief drives have scaled up, with the Central Muslim League sending large aid consignments from Islamabad and Karachi after distributing about 130,000 dry rations and setting up model tent villages in Jalalpur Pirwala, and Punjab has launched a flood rehabilitation program.
