Indore Metro’s Core Stretch To Go Underground as State Sets Aside Up to Rs 900 Crore

Officials say the change is intended to reduce disruption in the city’s busiest neighborhoods.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Mohan Yadav approved converting a roughly 3.3–3.5 km segment to an underground alignment between Khajrana Square and the railway station.
  • The state government will bear the additional Rs 800–900 crore cost resulting from the shift from an elevated design.
  • The decision follows resistance to elevated works in dense areas and is framed as improving traffic management, public convenience and city aesthetics.
  • Separately, MPMRC says the next 11 km elevated extension is over 80% complete, with a CMRS safety inspection expected in January and a possible opening by end-March if cleared.
  • The state also cleared an expanded Indore Metropolitan Area of about 14,000 sq km and approved a 25-year traffic plan, with plans for an elevated corridor on AB Road after BRTS removal.
