Indore Metro Extended to 17 Km as New Section Is Inaugurated

The addition boosts city service and rolls out cashless ticketing with discounts to draw riders and support wider metro growth in India.

Overview

  • Officials, with Union minister Manohar Lal and Chief Minister Mohan Yadav present, inaugurated the extended Gandhi Nagar–Malviya Nagar Chauraha section on Saturday.
  • Regular passenger services on the roughly 17 km corridor with 16 stations begin Sunday, operating from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm with trains every 15 minutes and more than 80 trips a day.
  • The extension introduces an Automatic Fare Collection system and MPMRCL mobile-app ticketing that accepts UPI, QR codes and e-wallets, plus a 5% return-ticket discount, a 10% group discount and 8–15% e-wallet recharge bonuses.
  • Authorities say the new section cost about Rs 2,850 crore and used by the government to note that India’s operational metro network has reached roughly 1,170 km, a figure officials say could overtake the US in about two years if construction proceeds.
  • Work on the full 31.32 km Indore corridor continues after construction began in 2019, and officials warn that dense urban sections and local opposition have caused delays that could affect completion timelines.
