Indore Jail Launches Inmate-Run Spice Processing Unit

The initiative equips prisoners with low-capital industry skills by producing spices for retail sale through an external outlet

Overview

  • The Madhya Pradesh Prison and Correctional Services Department inaugurated Maa Ahilya Masala Udyog at Indore Central Jail on July 10 during Guru Purnima.
  • Automatic spice-processing machinery has been installed and inmates are training to produce coriander, turmeric, Kashmiri red chilli and garam masala.
  • Initial batches will supply jail kitchens in Indore and surrounding districts before being sold to the public in 250g, 500g and 1kg packets at an external outlet.
  • Jail officials plan to request district administration permission to extend spice deliveries to government hostels and other public institutions.
  • Revenue from sales is expected to fund prison welfare activities and provide wages and food processing experience for inmates.
