Overview

  • On June 13, Sahil Sheikh and Altaf Shah were arrested for allegedly raping two Hindu women under the pretext of marriage and claimed they received ₹3 lakh from Councillor Anwar Qadri to facilitate conversions and prostitution.
  • Qadri was booked under the Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 2021 and sections on criminal conspiracy after police raids on June 15 failed to locate him and he remains at large.
  • Investigators are analyzing mobile videos, messages and bank statements to verify the extent of Qadri’s involvement in the alleged scheme.
  • The BJP has urged authorities to arrest Qadri under the National Security Act and probe his assets, while Congress describes the case as a politically motivated campaign.
  • The case stems from two separate FIRs filed by the victims alleging rape on the promise of marriage, which were later expanded to include forced religious conversion charges.
