Indonesia Repatriates Lindsay Sandiford and Another Briton Under UK Transfer Deal

Indonesian officials approved the handover on humanitarian grounds under a transfer pact signed Oct. 21.

Overview

  • Coordinating minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra said the pair will depart Bali shortly after midnight Friday, flying via Dubai to London.
  • Lindsay Sandiford, 69, was arrested in 2012 with 3.8 kg of cocaine and received a death sentence in 2013 that was upheld by Indonesia’s highest court.
  • Shahab Shahabadi, 35, has been serving a life term since 2014 linked to methamphetamine shipments and was moved to Bali for the transfer.
  • The repatriation agreement was signed by Mahendra and UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper on Oct. 21, with UK officials reported to have worked the case for more than 18 months.
  • Indonesian authorities cite serious health concerns and good behaviour, reflecting a broader shift since executions halted in 2016 and more foreign prisoners have been sent home under bilateral deals.
