Indonesia Landslide in Central Java Leaves 11 Dead, 12 Missing

Days of monsoon rain triggered the disaster.

Overview

  • Local search and rescue chief Muhammad Abdullah said on Saturday afternoon that 11 bodies had been recovered and 12 people remained unaccounted for.
  • The slides struck on Thursday evening around 8pm, hitting three villages in Cilacap district and damaging or burying homes, including at least 12 houses in Cibeunying, Majenang.
  • More than 700 personnel from search and rescue, the military, police and volunteers are deployed, with excavators and tracking dogs assisting the operation.
  • Unstable ground and continuing adverse weather have slowed efforts, after the national weather agency warned earlier in the week of extreme conditions and hydrometeorological hazards.
  • Cilacap authorities declared a 20‑day emergency to expedite the response and prepared relocations for residents living in high‑risk areas near the site.
