IndiGo Cancels Nearly 500 Flights on Day 7 as Government Pledges Tough Action

Officials attribute the collapse to crew rostering failures, signaling penalties after the regulator’s review.

Overview

  • Operations on Monday remained curtailed with roughly 500 cancellations as IndiGo planned 1,802 flights to 137 of its 138 destinations, with major hubs such as Delhi and Bengaluru logging the highest cuts.
  • Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu told Parliament the disruptions stemmed from internal crew rostering and planning issues, and he vowed strict enforcement to set an industry example following a formal inquiry.
  • The DGCA issued show‑cause notices to IndiGo’s CEO Pieter Elbers and COO–Accountable Manager Isidre Porqueras, granted a deadline extension to 6 pm Monday, and received their replies as the regulator weighs enforcement action.
  • Passenger remediation continued at scale: government data show 5.86 lakh PNRs refunded between Dec 1–7 (₹569.65 crore) and a total of ₹827 crore since Nov 21, with about 9,000 bags affected and roughly half delivered so far under expedited directives and fare caps.
  • IndiGo says cancellations have fallen from about 1,500 on Dec 5 to around 500 on Dec 8, punctuality has improved, and it is targeting network stabilisation by Dec 10.
