Indigenous Protesters Block COP30 Main Gate in Belém, Forcing Reroute as Talks Continue

Munduruku leaders used the blockade to seek direct talks with President Lula over contested Amazon infrastructure.

Overview

  • Roughly 60 to 100 Indigenous protesters, led by Munduruku representatives, peacefully blocked the main entrance for about 90 minutes to two hours on Friday morning.
  • Conference attendees were redirected to a side checkpoint staffed by soldiers as UN staff shifted metal detectors, creating long queues before the main gate reopened.
  • COP30 president André Corrêa do Lago met the group at the entrance, held a protester’s baby during the exchange, and then moved discussions with organizers to a nearby venue.
  • This was the second disruption in days after an earlier incident in which demonstrators stormed the venue and clashed with security, resulting in minor injuries.
  • Protesters pressed for a meeting with President Lula and called for revoking the National Hydroway Plan, canceling the Ferrogrão railway, accelerating land demarcation, and rejecting deforestation carbon credits, while negotiations continued on finance, markets, and transparency.
