IndiaThailand Launch MAITREE‑XIV Joint Army Exercise in Meghalaya

The two-week training tests counter-terror operations under UN Charter Chapter VII to deepen interoperability.

Overview

  • The 14th edition runs from September 1 to 14 at the Joint Training Node in Umroi, Meghalaya.
  • India deployed 120 personnel from a Madras Regiment battalion, while Thailand sent 53 troops from the 1st Infantry Battalion, 14th Infantry Brigade.
  • Training focuses on company-level counter-terrorist operations in semi-urban terrain conducted under the UN Charter’s Chapter VII framework.
  • The programme features tactical drills, joint planning, special arms instruction, physical fitness and raiding missions, culminating in a 48-hour validation exercise simulating realistic scenarios.
  • MAITREE, instituted in 2006 and alternating between both countries, is presented as reinforcing defence ties in line with the IndiaThailand Strategic Partnership announced in April 2025.
