India’s State Energy Efficiency Index 2024 Names Assam, Tripura, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh as Top Performers

The sixth edition evaluates FY 2023–24 outcomes using 66 indicators across seven demand sectors.

Overview

  • The Bureau of Energy Efficiency released the national index in New Delhi, with Akash Tripathi unveiling the report as Director General of BEE and Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Power.
  • The number of frontrunner states fell from seven to five, with Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana and Tamil Nadu retaining the designation while Assam and Kerala moved into the achiever category.
  • All 36 states and Union Territories prepared State Energy Efficiency Action Plans, and 31 created State-Level Steering Committees on energy transition chaired by their Chief Secretaries.
  • State policy adoption continued to expand, with 24 states notifying the Energy Conservation Building Code 2017 and 20 integrating it into municipal by-laws.
  • Electric mobility gained traction, with 31 states adopting State Electric Mobility Policies and 14 requiring EV charging infrastructure in buildings, while officials credited Tripura and Assam’s targeted actions across sectors for their strong showings.
