India’s Smartphone Shipments Edge Up in H1 2025 as iPhone 16 Tops Sales and Samsung Leads Super-Premium Segment

IDC warns that rising average prices and pending US tariff review threaten export momentum and could temper growth in the second half.

Overview

  • H1 shipments reached 70 million units, up 0.9 percent year-on-year, with Q2 volumes rising 7.3 percent to 37 million.
  • Apple shipped 5.9 million iPhones in H1, a 21.5 percent increase, and the iPhone 16 was the country’s top-shipped model.
  • Samsung claimed 49 percent share of the super-premium segment (>$800), displacing Apple at 48 percent.
  • Premium ($600–$800) shipments climbed 96 percent and average selling prices hit a record US$275 in Q2.
  • Exports of Apple-origin devices from India reached US$6 billion in Apr–Jun (+82 percent), but PLI phase-out and a US Section 232 decision by mid-August pose risks to future gains.
