Overview
- From September 1, 2025, HUID is mandatory on any hallmarked silver article, while silver hallmarking itself remains voluntary.
- Official data show strong early uptake, with over 17.35 lakh pieces carrying a six-character alphanumeric HUID laser-marked alongside the BIS Standard Mark.
- Consumers can enter a HUID in the BIS CARE mobile app to view purity, item type, the submitting jeweller and the Assaying & Hallmarking Centre.
- Purity grades 925 and 800 account for nearly 90% of hallmarked items, with the southern region leading volumes, followed by the western and eastern regions.
- The initiative builds on India’s gold hallmarking network, now mandatory in 373 districts with 1,610 centres and over 2.08 lakh registered jewellers.
