- UN Human Rights Council President Jürg Lauber announced S. Muralidhar’s selection to lead the three‑member Commission.
- He succeeds Brazilian expert Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro and will serve alongside Florence Mumba and reappointed member Chris Sidoti.
- The Commission was created in 2021 by HRC resolution S‑30/1 to investigate alleged violations since 13 April 2021 and to examine root causes such as systemic discrimination.
- In 2024 the Council expanded the scope to require separate reporting on Israeli settlers and on arms transfers, including weapons used in Gaza after 7 October 2023.
- A Commission report issued in September 2025 concluded that Israel committed genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
