India’s October Car Sales Surge as Mahindra Sets SUV Record and Tata Nexon Leads

Lower GST rates during the festive month lifted demand, with refreshed SUVs and new EVs reshaping the sales order.

  • Mahindra posted 71,624 units in October, up 31% year over year, marking its highest-ever monthly SUV tally and lifting market share to about 15.3% for a No. 2 finish.
  • Tata Motors sold 61,134 vehicles, a 27% annual rise, as market share reached 13.1% and the Nexon, including its EV version, became India’s top-selling car at 22,083 units.
  • Facelifts timed to the season powered gains: Bolero rose 46% to 14,343 units after its October 6 update and Thar jumped 51% to 12,029 units after the October 3 refresh.
  • Other Mahindra standouts included Scorpio at 17,880 units (+14%) and XUV3XO at 12,237 (+28%), while laggards included XUV700 (−3% YoY) and XUV400, which fell to 152 units (−85%).
  • EVs added meaningful volume as Mahindra’s XEV 9e reached 2,708 units and BE6 hit 2,134, with announced launches next including Mahindra’s XEV 9s later this month and Tata’s Sierra on November 25.
