Overview

  • Daily calorie intake for the poorest households climbed to 1,688 Kcal in both rural and urban areas in 2023-24.
  • The top 5% of spenders cut their consumption to about 2,941 Kcal in rural zones and 3,092 Kcal in urban zones over the same period.
  • Overall per-capita calories edged down by 0.9% in rural India and 0.4% in urban India between 2022-23 and 2023-24.
  • Daily fat intake has risen sharply over a decade, climbing 31% in rural areas and 20.3% in urban areas since 2011-12, while protein consumption held steady.
  • Survey methodology changes limit direct comparisons with earlier rounds even as state-level disparities in nutritional intake remain pronounced.
