India’s Kharif Sowing Reaches Record 109.66 Million Hectares as Regional Gaps Grow

Authorities are tracking regional sowing gaps to determine if monsoon performance warrants revising foodgrain production targets

Overview

  • As of July 11, kharif sowing in India stands at 109.66 million hectares, a 6.65% increase over last year.
  • Paddy sowing has risen over 10% year-on-year to 12.36 million hectares aided by the early monsoon.
  • In Ludhiana district, 90–92% of the expected 2.58 lakh hectares for paddy transplantation has been completed.
  • Telangana has sown crops on just 42.48% of its normal kharif area because of an 11% rainfall deficit recorded at 165.5 mm to date.
  • The India Meteorological Department projects light to moderate rains until July 16 and the Agriculture Ministry is monitoring monsoon trends to decide on potential adjustments to its 354.64 million tonne foodgrain production target.
