With e-filing utilities yet to be updated, taxpayers face a compressed timeline for compliance, but no deadline extension is anticipated under current circumstances.

Overview

  • The statutory deadline for filing income tax returns for non-audit cases in India remains July 31, 2025, with no indications of an extension so far.
  • The Income Tax Department has notified all ITR forms for the 2025 assessment year, but online filing utilities have not yet been updated as of mid-May 2025.
  • TDS data for the last quarter of FY 2024–25 will be reflected in Form 26AS by May 31, and salaried taxpayers can expect Form 16 from employers by mid-June.
  • Historically, deadline extensions have only occurred under extraordinary circumstances such as technical glitches or public emergencies, none of which are currently present.
  • Despite the April 1 start of the financial year, administrative delays effectively leave taxpayers with a limited 30–45 day window to file their returns.
