India's Industrial Growth Eases to 6.7% in September

Provisional figures show strong manufacturing and power output while a mining slump and new measurement rules leave room for revisions.

Overview

  • The quick estimate released Wednesday showed India’s Index of Industrial Production grew 6.7% year‑on‑year in September 2026 with the IIP at 124.3 versus 116.5 in September 2025.
  • Manufacturing led the gain with 7.6% growth and electricity and gas rose 11.2% while mining and quarrying contracted 6.2%, and three manufacturing subsegments — motor vehicles (19.0%), electrical equipment (33.9%) and rubber and plastics (19.9%) — were the top contributors.
  • The statistics office now uses a new IIP series with base year 2022–23 and has shifted to output PPI as the deflator for many item groups, a change that alters comparability with older readings and can change growth rates.
  • September’s estimate is provisional, compiled from an 86.5% weighted response rate, and follows a downward revision of August’s quick estimate from 8.0% to 7.8%, with the next monthly IIP release for October due on November 30, 2026.
  • The print highlights near‑term volatility for businesses, markets and policy makers because festive timing, base effects and sampling can sway monthly readings so the October release will be watched for confirmation or revision of the trend.
