India’s Highway Network Tops 35,000 Km as 2,730 Km of Expressways Become Operational

The transport ministry has prepared an annual plan covering 19,555 km of highway expansions to be executed this financial year

Overview

  • Highway projects generated an estimated 48.87 crore man-days of direct employment and 57.81 crore man-days of indirect employment
  • Of 8,391 km of planned access-controlled expressways, 5,110 km have been constructed and 2,730 km opened to traffic
  • The ministry is deploying FASTag tolling, ANPR traffic monitoring and Advanced Traffic Management Systems on four-lane and above corridors to boost efficiency
  • There are 1,240 national highway projects under construction spanning 29,406 km at a cost of Rs 7.80 lakh crore, with 15,674 km completed so far
  • In Karnataka, 23 highway projects covering nearly 600 km and costing Rs 10,749 crore are slated for FY26 completion but face land acquisition delays
