India’s First Hydrogen Train Enters Final Commissioning on JindSonipat Route

A dedicated green hydrogen plant in Jind is ready to fuel imminent trial runs that will guide decisions on wider deployment.

Overview

  • Haryana officials say the pilot is in its final preparation phase, with an assured 11 kV power supply and about 3,000 kg hydrogen storage at the Jind facility.
  • Coaches have reached Jind for installations, and trial operations are expected soon, with reports indicating a possible inaugural run on January 26 and a likely launch by Prime Minister Narendra Modi later this month.
  • The 10-coach set includes two 1,200 kW driving power cars (2,400 kW total) and eight passenger coaches, developed to RDSO specifications and manufactured at ICF Chennai with support reported from Spanish partner Green H.
  • Officials expect initial speeds of 110–140 km/h, targeting a JindSonipat journey time of about one hour, with fuel cells emitting only water vapour and steam.
  • Indian Railways plans to submit a joint performance report after trials to the Centre to determine costs, routes, and the scope of any broader rollout.
