India’s Edible Oil Import Bill Jumps 22% to Rs 1.61 Lakh Crore as Volumes Hold Steady

SEA data point to a pivot toward soft oils with record soybean purchases, reshaped by duty changes.

Overview

  • Total edible oil imports in 2024–25 were about 16.3 million tonnes, essentially flat year on year, according to SEA.
  • Soybean oil purchases reached a record 5.47 million tonnes, lifting soft oils to 53% of the import basket.
  • Palm oil imports fell to roughly 7.58 million tonnes, cutting palm’s share of total arrivals to 47%.
  • The crude–refined duty gap was widened in May to 19.25%, curbing refined palm inflows, while about 750,000 tonnes of refined soybean and sunflower oils entered via Nepal under zero duty.
  • Vegetable oil stocks declined to around 1.73 million tonnes as of November 1, with key suppliers including Indonesia and Malaysia for CPO, Argentina and Brazil for soybean oil, and Russia for sunflower oil.
