Overview
- The beta version launched on June 4 allows users to generate a unique ten-character alphanumeric code via the ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ web portal.
- DIGIPIN divides the country into 4m by 4m geocoded grids that complement the existing six-digit postal system without storing any personal data.
- Developed in partnership with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Centre, the system aims to improve last-mile delivery and emergency response accuracy.
- Public feedback is being invited through June to fine-tune the system’s GNSS-dependent accuracy before the final rollout.
- The Minister of State for Telecommunications has asked the Department of Posts to explore transitioning DIGIPIN to a self-financing funding model.
