India’s DGCA Receives ICAO Council President Certificate for Safety Oversight Gains

India’s Effective Implementation score climbed to 85.65% in the 2022 audit after the regulator overhauled legislation, licensing, operations and airworthiness oversight.

Overview

  • DGCA chief Faiz Ahmed Kidwai accepted the certificate at the 42nd ICAO Assembly in Montreal on Tuesday.
  • The honour was presented by ICAO Council President Salvatore Sciacchitano under the No Country Left Behind initiative.
  • ICAO said eligibility is based on objective results from its Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme’s Continuous Monitoring Approach.
  • India’s score rose from 55.15% in 2017 to 85.65% in November 2022 after reforms addressing previously flagged deficiencies across critical areas.
  • Reports note the improved audit results moved India into the global top 50 for the first time, with the DGCA also pledging further improvements and simpler procedures.
