India’s Data Centre Capacity Tops 1.5 GW, With Mumbai at 53%

A CBRE report links the expansion to AI adoption, rapid digitalisation, supportive government policies.

Overview

  • India’s operational data centre stock reached about 1.53 GW by September 2025, according to CBRE.
  • Roughly 260 MW of new capacity was added in the first nine months of 2025.
  • The market is highly concentrated, with Mumbai at 53% of capacity, followed by Chennai at 20%, Delhi-NCR at 10% and Bengaluru at 7%.
  • Investment commitments have totaled nearly USD 94 billion since 2019, including about USD 30 billion pledged in January–September 2025, with Telangana, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu leading new projects.
  • Mumbai’s dominance reflects proximity to internet exchange points and submarine cable landings, while India offers cost advantages and a large AI talent base that CBRE expects to grow.
