India’s Coal Imports Fall 16% in July, With Thermal Down and Coking Up

Industry expects demand to firm before the late-September festivals.

Overview

  • July imports declined to 21.08 million tonnes from 25.23 million tonnes a year earlier, according to mjunction Services.
  • Total imports for April–July eased to 97.49 million tonnes versus 100.48 million tonnes in the same period last year.
  • The July mix shifted as non-coking (thermal) imports fell to 11.54 million tonnes from 16.52 million, while coking coal rose to 5.85 million from 4.81 million.
  • For April–July, non-coking imports totaled 60.62 million tonnes compared with 65.64 million last year, and coking coal reached 22.22 million versus 20.26 million.
  • Mjunction attributed the dip to monsoon-season weak demand and high stockpiles, and the Coal Minister said there is no shortage and the government is prepared to meet requirements.
