India’s Central Universities See 26% of Faculty Posts Vacant, Reserved Categories Hardest Hit

Ministry figures attribute stalled appointments to a lack of suitable reservation-category candidates with no central record of those deemed unfit.

  • As of June 30, 2025, about 26% of the 18,951 sanctioned faculty posts across 46 central universities remain unfilled.
  • Reserved groups account for 36.7% of the 4,889 vacancies compared with 14.6% in the general category.
  • Professor posts show the widest gaps, with 80% of OBC and 83% of ST positions vacant and 64% of SC posts unfilled.
  • Associate professor vacancies run at 69% for OBC, 65% for ST and 51% for SC, while assistant professor shortfalls in those groups range from 14% to 23%.
  • In Rajya Sabha, MoS Sukanta Majumdar cited UGC rules on candidate suitability and highlighted that central records do not track those declared ‘not found suitable.’
