India’s 2023 Road Deaths Hit 1.73 Lakh as Overspeeding Leads

Two-wheeler riders comprised roughly 44% of fatalities.

  • The Road Accidents 2023 report records 4,80,583 crashes and 1,72,890 deaths nationwide, the highest fatality count since 2005.
  • Overspeeding was the dominant factor, linked to about 68% of deaths, far exceeding other violations such as wrong-side driving.
  • Fatalities were distributed across road types with 36.5% on National Highways, 22.8% on State Highways, and 40.7% on other roads.
  • Assam led the Northeast in 2019–2023 with 36,800 crashes and logged a 10.1% rise in deaths in 2023, while Meghalaya’s deaths increased to 168 even as total accidents fell.
  • Mizoram recorded the nation’s highest accident severity at 90.6, as the government advances 4Es initiatives alongside e‑DAR data systems, safety audits and automated inspections.
