India’s 2023 Crime Cases Rise 7.2% as Cyber Offences Soar and Homicides Dip

Expanded e-FIR access helped push up registrations, with cyber-fraud emerging as the biggest driver.

Overview

  • Cybercrime jumped 31.2% to 86,420 cases, with fraud accounting for 68.9% of incidents and the cybercrime rate rising from 4.8 to 6.2 per lakh.
  • Crimes against children increased 9.2% to 177,335 cases, led by kidnapping and abduction (79,884) and POCSO offences (67,694).
  • Crimes against Scheduled Tribes surged 28.8% to 12,960 cases, with Manipur recording 3,399 and the category’s crime rate climbing to 12.4 per lakh.
  • Metropolitan crime rose 10.6%; Delhi reported the highest IPC load at 323,000 cases, the top IPC crime rate among metros, and the lowest chargesheeting rate.
  • Thefts grew from 652,731 to 689,580, obstruction-on-public-way cases rose sharply, and Motor Vehicle Act violations nearly doubled under SLL, driving the overall increase.
