Indiana Unveils Second Draft of Student-Centered A–F School Grades

The model assigns points for individual academic mastery along with readiness indicators to calculate school ratings.

Overview

  • Indiana education officials presented the revised accountability framework to the State Board, advancing a proposed return to A–F grades.
  • Under the draft, each student earns points for test-based proficiency and defined skills and experiences, and school grades reflect the average of those student scores.
  • The update adds a 10th-grade “back on track” measure, elevates diploma readiness seals, and credits recovery such as at-risk readers passing IREAD in third grade.
  • Grades would use a 0–100 scale with A at 90–100, B at 80–89, C at 70–79, D at 60–69, and F at 0–59.
  • Public comments are open through Nov. 17, with an in-person hearing that day at 11 a.m. at the Indiana State Library, and a final rule is required by Dec. 31, 2025, with school grades due by December 2026.
