Indiana National Guard Begins 'Safe and Beautiful' Patrols in D.C. After 300 Troops Arrive

Requested by President Trump, Gov. Mike Braun's order sends Hoosier soldiers on a rotation of up to four months under Joint Task Force–DC training.

Overview

  • About 300 Indiana Guardsmen arrived in Washington on Dec. 6 to support local and federal authorities with community safety patrols and traffic-control posts.
  • Soldiers trained at Camp Atterbury since mid-November on response, crowd management and de-escalation, and will continue mission-specific preparation with Joint Task Force–District of Columbia.
  • The deployment was authorized Nov. 19 by Gov. Mike Braun and is part of the D.C. Safe and Beautiful mission.
  • The contingent includes troops from the 113th Engineer Battalion based in Gary, with additional soldiers from Bloomington-area units.
  • Indiana’s rotation joins a broader multi-state presence that includes 150 Ohio Guard members, as scrutiny of the mission has intensified following a D.C. shooting that left one West Virginia Guardsman dead and another wounded.
