Indiana Man Sentenced to 38–60 Months for 2015 Assault of 11-Year-Old in Michigan

The long-dormant case advanced after a Marshals fugitive operation returned him to face charges.

Overview

  • Michael Burch, 34, received the prison term from Judge Jason Elmore in Wexford County’s 28th Circuit Court.
  • He pleaded guilty in November to attempted second-degree criminal sexual conduct.
  • Officials say the assault occurred as the child slept in a travel camper in Cadillac in June 2015.
  • Burch left Michigan before charges were issued and was arrested in Indiana in January 2025 through Operation Survivor Justice.
  • Upon release, he must register as a sex offender and submit to lifetime electronic monitoring, and the survivor told the court, “I can finally breathe.”
