Indiana Man Charged in 1998 Pontiac Killing Waives Extradition

Prosecutors cite a 2020 cold-case review that tied him to the 1998 killing, with arraignment expected next week.

Overview

  • Jack Anthony Young, 45, of Mishawaka, Indiana, has been identified as the suspect in the shooting death of Charles Barnett, 73, in Pontiac on April 30, 1998.
  • Young was arrested without incident on Nov. 17 by the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.
  • Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald has charged Young with one count of felony murder, a life offense in Michigan.
  • Investigators say Barnett surprised a burglar who shot him, then stole and crashed Barnett’s car, which officers traced back to the victim’s home where his body was found.
  • Sgt. Todd Hunt and retired Lt. Steve Troy reopened the case in 2020 and, after reviewing evidence, linked Young to the homicide; if convicted, he could face life without parole.
