Indiana Guard Arrives in D.C. for 'Safe and Beautiful' Patrols

The deployment comes under scrutiny after a West Virginia guardswoman was killed in a D.C. shooting during similar duty.

Overview

  • Roughly 300 Indiana National Guard soldiers reached Washington on Saturday to begin a security rotation under the D.C. Safe and Beautiful mission.
  • Troops are tasked with community safety patrols and traffic-control posts in support of local and federal law enforcement to curb crime and protect property.
  • The contingent trained at Camp Atterbury on response, crowd management and de-escalation and will continue mission-specific training with Joint Task ForceD.C.
  • Gov. Mike Braun authorized the deployment at President Donald Trump’s request, with state officials estimating the rotation could last up to four months.
  • The move joins a multi-state Guard presence in the capital, following the shooting of two West Virginia guardsmen, as Ohio keeps 150 troops through February and Trump says he plans to add 500 more.
