Indian, U.S. Naval Chiefs Set Priorities To Deepen Indo-Pacific Cooperation

  • Indian Navy chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi met Adm. Samuel J. Paparo, Adm. Stephen T. Koehler and Lt. Gen. James F. Glynn in high-level sessions in the United States on November 15 during his November 12–17 visit.
  • The meetings reviewed core pillars of the defense partnership focused on maritime security, improved interoperability and expanded operational coordination across the region.
  • Both sides discussed closer information-sharing and maritime domain awareness, including linking the Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness initiative with India’s Information Fusion Centre for the Indian Ocean Region.
  • Officials signaled plans to increase the complexity and frequency of joint drills such as MALABAR, PASSEX, MILAN and Combined Maritime Forces exercises to sharpen warfighting, logistics and sustainment.
  • Priorities also covered protecting sea lines of communication and undersea infrastructure, cooperation on HADR, SAR and counter-piracy, and collaboration in unmanned systems, ISR, cyber and space, with no new binding commitments announced.
