Indian Travel to U.S. Falls for First June Since 2001, Downturn Extends Into July

The decline coincides with a broader slide in U.S. international arrivals.

Overview

  • NTTO data show 210,000 Indians visited the U.S. in June 2025, down 8% from 230,000 a year earlier, marking the first June year-over-year drop since 2001 outside the Covid period.
  • Provisional July figures indicate a further 5.5% year-over-year decline in Indian visitors, signaling that the weakness persisted into midsummer.
  • U.S. inbound totals have also softened overall, with non‑U.S. resident arrivals down 6.2% in June, 7% in May, and 8% in March, according to NTTO.
  • India remains the fourth-largest source of U.S. international visitors and the second-largest overseas market, with the top five source countries supplying 59.4% of June arrivals.
  • Travel industry sources report student visa delays this year and caution that it is early to attribute the drop to stricter U.S. visa policy under President Trump, while also citing recent security and operational disruptions as dampening factors.
