Indian Travel to Turkey and Azerbaijan Slumps After Pakistan Support, Latest Data Show

Fresh data point to a market-led boycott by Indian travelers after Operation Sindoor.

Overview

  • Official tallies show Indian arrivals to Azerbaijan fell about 56% in May–August to roughly 44,000 from nearly 100,000, while Turkey saw a one-third decline to about 90,400 from around 136,000.
  • In Azerbaijan, India fell from a top-five source market to eleventh by August, with just 6,032 Indian visitors that month, a 72% year-on-year drop.
  • MakeMyTrip reported a 60% drop in bookings and a 250% surge in cancellations for the two destinations in mid-May and said it discontinued promotions and advised against non-essential travel.
  • Other Indian travel firms, including Ixigo, Cox & Kings and EaseMyTrip, paused listings or discouraged trips, and visa facilitator Atlys cited fewer applications for Turkey and Azerbaijan.
  • The reversal followed strong 2024 growth and expanded direct links—DGCA logged 5.05 lakh direct India–Turkey passengers and 80,567 to Azerbaijan—highlighting a sentiment-driven downturn without a government advisory.
